July 2025: Summer in the Psalms – Psalm 119 “Life in the Word” week 2
Hello family,
Welcome to Week Two of the Embrace the Word study Summer in the Psalms: Psalm 119 – Life in the Word! Week One provided a great start as we explored how the Word of God serves as a pathway to blessings, grace, and peace.
(Link to the FREE Devotional Guide at the end of this email)
We also explored the structure of Psalm 119 (see the devotion guide). One of the things we pointed out was that there are many synonyms used for the Word of God. Of the many, there are eight primary ones that we repeatedly encounter. I wanted to take another look at these as we read (we should reference them often throughout the study). It will help us understand the sense with which the psalmist writes.
God’s Words are:
- Law — God’s law is not a burden but a source of life and guidance. Embrace His instructions as they shape your character. “I will keep your law continually, forever and ever” (Psalm 119:44).
- Commandments — His commands give direction and freedom. When we follow them, we walk confidently through life’s challenges, helping us navigate life’s challenges joyfully “I find my delight in Your commandments, which I love.” (Psalm 119:45).

- Precepts — These are God’s wise instructions that bring understanding and clarity. We should treasure and appreciate His detailed guidance that helps you walk faithfully step by step. “I will delight in your precepts; I will not neglect your word” (Psalm 119:16).
- Statutes — God’s statutes reflect His justice and faithfulness, reminding us that His character never changes. Treasure the unchanging truths that offer stability and wisdom no matter what changes around us. “Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage” (Psalm 119:54).
- Judgments (decrees, rules) — We can trust in God’s righteous decisions revealed in Scripture, knowing His justice brings order and peace to our lives. “I will praise You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments.” (Psalm 119:7).
- Testimonies — Represent His unchanging character and faithful promises as sources of hope. “I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame” (Psalm 119:46).
- Word (Dabar) — Above all, the Word is living and active, full of power to sustain and transform us. “My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word” (Psalm 119:81).
- Word (Imrah) — Delight in every word God has spoken—promises, commands, and teachings—that build your faith and shape your worship. “Let Your mercies come also to me, O Lord—Your salvation according to Your Word” (Psalm 119:41)

As you are reading, see what synonym the psalmist uses for the Word of God. It will help you discover a wealth of meaning in each passage and new ways to delight in His Word.
This week, we will continue to explore the blessings that come from His Word, including hope in despair.
