Seeds of Gratitude – Thanks and Giving 2025: Week 2

Welcome to week two of the ETW study Seeds of Gratitude: Thanks and Giving! Let’s keep planting those seeds—God has been so good, and we have so much to be grateful for.

As one of the praise leaders at my church, I love it when the congregation joins in as we sing praises to God. For that reason, we often choose repetitive songs, making it easier for corporate worship.

Psalm 136, known as the Great Hallel (praise), invites corporate worship through the repeated refrain “For His mercy endures forever.” This psalm recounts God’s mighty work for His people—creation, deliverance (the Exodus), and giving inheritance (the land)—and each line is met with that joyful response. The repetition didn’t bore the people; instead, it helped them remember God and what He had done.

In the same way, rehearsing truths in your mind helps you focus and reflect on what is true. It’s also a practical memory technique that brings truth to mind when you need it most.

Psalm 136 reminds us to remember and recall God’s mercy—His steadfast lovingkindness. When we remember, we come to one conclusion: the Lord is good. So we respond with hearts full of thanksgiving.

In Psalm 136 we see:

  • God’s steadfast lovingkindness in His character (vv. 1–4): He is good, and He alone does great wonders—so we give thanks.
  • God’s steadfast lovingkindness in His creation (vv. 4–9): By His wisdom, He made the heavens and the earth and provided for our needs—so we give thanks.
  • God’s steadfast lovingkindness in His deliverance (vv. 10–20): With a strong hand and outstretched arm, He rescues His people—so we give thanks.
  • God’s steadfast lovingkindness in His compassion (vv. 21–26): He remembered us in our brokenness, rescued and redeemed us—so we give thanks.

Psalm 136 has echoed in corporate worship for thousands of years—and God is still worthy of praise. So lift your voice and join in: “Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever.”

Have you joined our THANKS and GIVING challenge? We’re reflecting on God’s Word and expressing gratitude in practical ways to cultivate a deeper appreciation for all He has done.

This week, let’s level up the challenge: practice gratitude, and also watch your words. Try to avoid complaining this week. When you feel a complaint rising, replace it with praise—name three things you’re thankful for instead.

Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. — Philippians 2:14-15
