Do You Know Her? (Wisdom)

Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:5,7

Both of my children are in college away from home. When we talk, I am always asking if they are holding on to the teachings and the wisdom that have been imparted to them. I always get a “yes, Mom!” (with an eye roll, I’m sure) to assure me that they are holding on to the things they’ve learned with a firm grasp. What’s most important to me is that they hold on to the godly wisdom they’ve gained.

In Proverbs 4, Solomon pleaded with his son to make wisdom his quest. He knew that wisdom was a valuable commodity. Wisdom is still chiefly valuable and Solomon’s words are still relevant for us today. In Proverbs 4, Solomon emphasizes the importance of wisdom by personifying it. He admonishes his son to love her, exalt her, embrace her, keep her, and never forsake her. We’d do well to heed Solomon’s advice.

Don’t Forsake Her. She Will Preserve You. (v. 6) Do not turn away from wisdom because it will guard your life and keep you on paths of righteousness and truth. Many things in the world oppose the wisdom of God. Be careful not to be swayed by those things because godly wisdom will be a safeguard for you.

Love Her. She Will Keep You. (v. 6) Don’t just get wisdom, but love wisdom. Fully devote yourself to godly wisdom that comes from the Word of God. When you love wisdom, you will pursue it. That wisdom will keep you. It will guard you from many heartaches, dangers, and peril.

Exalt Her. She Will Promote You. (v. 8) Esteem godly wisdom very highly. Wisdom will cause you to mature spiritually! You will be lifted above the temporal things of this world. The more you regard wisdom, the more you will be lifted.

Embrace Her. She Will Bring You Honor. (v. 8) Hold on to wisdom dearly. Wisdom will bring honor to your life. Wickedness and folly brings shame to our lives.

She Will Place on your Head an Ornament of Grace. (v. 9) You will be adorned with beauty and grace. Wisdom will be like a victor’s laurel on your head! When you walk in godly wisdom, you will be victorious in life.

Keep Her. She is Your Life. (v.13) Solomon gives three reasons that we should keep, or cling to, wisdom.

  1. Wisdom Leads To Right Paths–wisdom steers you down paths of integrity. We are called to be people of integrity. In a world that seems more and more corrupt, our integrity should shine the light of Christ.
  2. When You Walk, Your Steps Will Not be Hindered. Many things attempt to derail you in this walk with Christ. When you cling to wisdom you can walk unhindered on the path of life.
  3. When You Run, You Will Not Stumble. When you walk in godly wisdom, you can run the race well and not stumble along the way. God’s wisdom will guide you.

In a world where many are forsaking godly wisdom, God’s people must not only gain wisdom, we must also hold on to it.There are many things we pursue in life, but godly wisdom is among the most beneficial things we can gain. We should regard the love and pursuit of wisdom as essential to living a victorious life! Wisdom is the principal thing! Do you know her? If not, get to know her and never let her go.
