Even the Sparrows
In the hustle and bustle of today’s digital age, the search for significance can derail us from the purpose God has for our lives. Instead of resting confidently in the fact that God is living on the inside of us, we wrestle with uncertainty, insecurity, loneliness and fear. If we are not careful, these conditions will drive our lives leading us to make decisions based on emotions instead of walking in the wisdom of God.
The person dealing with uncertainty will question, question and over-question every decision and seek counsel from many sources rather than to rest in the assurance that the spirit of God gives. Let me say, seeking wise counsel is not bad; scripture tells us that “victory is won through many advisers” Proverbs 11:14. However, the uncertain person asks their pastor, their parents, their best friend, their neighbor, consults horoscopes, checks the internet and will STILL second guess their decisions and fret the results.
The insecure person does not embrace the person God is forming as a masterpiece. Instead they see a fractured person who constantly needs affirmation from the outside. “Am I doing it right?”, “Do I look ok?”, “Will I be okay?” They are constantly wandering and waiting for the other shoe to fall.
Fear is at the root of all these deep-seated emotional states.
But God did not intend for us to live lives riddled with doubt and insecurities. Instead, he wants us to live free. Comfort, peace, joy, and overwhelming rivers of love stream from the Father to us. Psalms 84:3 talks of the sparrow finding a home, a resting place at the altar of God. Even the most lowly, seemingly insignificant bird can find a familiar place where they can be at ease. In the presence of Almighty God we can be free from the pain of insecurity, uncertainty and fear. In His presence we can also experience joy by just being ourselves–being ok to just be ourselves. In Him is where we find ourselves and truly walk “in our element”, that place of gifting and anointing that can only be lived out with the help of the Holy Spirit.
So, sparrows let’s sing!
For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers Proverbs 11:14 NIV
Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young– a place near your altar, LORD Almighty, my King and my God. Psalm 84:3 NIV
