January 2025 James: A Faith That Works Week 2
Hi family,
As I write this, it is a snow day. Tomorrow is, too! I hope you are warm where you are!

Welcome to Week Two of our Embrace the Word Study, “James: A Faith that Works!” Last week, we started to explore James’ teachings to the twelve tribes who had been scattered abroad. He encouraged them to persevere through trials by seeing those trials as an occasion for joy! Instead of always trying to escape, sometimes we must bear up under the trial and let the pressure and weight produce patience and endurance. Trials seem like a strange reason for joy but remember that they are there to help refine you into the person God has created you to be. Keep that in mind when you are going through it.
James also talked about temptations in chapter one (James 1:13-15). Temptations are often a sticky topic because many believe God is dangling enticement in front of us, waiting to swat us when we fall. It reminds me of the videos circulating around social media where a sweet treat is placed right in front of a darling little one. The parent tells them not to touch it, then proceeds to leave the room. No sooner than the parent is out of sight does the precious little friend grab the sweet treat! That is not a picture of our loving Father, nor is it an object lesson for obedience.
First, please know that God is always and only good (James 1:17)! He will not trick you or toy with your emotions. Next, understand that God will withhold no good from us (Psalm 84:11). Even though we are tempted by what entices us, God still meets us in that place of struggle, and He provides a way to escape (1 Corinthians 10:13)! If you are struggling with temptations, read 1 Corinthians 10:13. Let it be encouragement to you. Find an accountability partner who can help you with honest, authentic, trustworthy dialogue and prayer (see James 5:18; we will get there, I promise 😊!)
This week, we are finishing the first chapter and jumping into chapter two.
Remember the challenge of reading the entire book multiple times during our study. It will help you to grasp the context fully. We are also memorizing key scriptures from James. This week’s memory verses are James 1:22-24.
Also, remember I am your study partner! I am here for you. If you are grappling with something, have questions, or want to share, please do! So many of you have grabbed a friend and are studying together! I love it. And even if you are going it alone, there is no better partner than the Holy Spirit!
