A Year in Review: March 2022 – Sermon on the Mount

In today’s Year in Review, we look back at March, where we studied the most famous sermon ever given, The Sermon on the Mount.

In March, we looked, with fresh eyes, at The Sermon on the Mount, which is packed with wisdom for Christian living. As disciples of Christ, these words are essential to kingdom living. One area we studied, in particular, was Jesus’ teaching on anxiety. In what many call ‘The Age of Anxiety,’ it helps to know that our Savior addressed this issue in His teaching.

Jesus spoke about anxiety in Matthew 6:25-34. He addressed those who allow life’s cares to overwhelm them in unhealthy ways. Jesus points out examples–the birds of the air and the lilies of the field–who are within His special care. Neither has to worry about what might be. Jesus says that we are valued so much more than these. If they are not neglected or forgotten, neither will we be.

Worry and anxiety cannot add one single moment to your life. But it can steal precious moments meant to be enjoyed and shared with others.

Jesus gives a cure for anxiety, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” When you pursue kingdom living, you will enjoy “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17).

Paul also spoke about avoiding anxiety in Philippians 4:6-7. He admonished us not to be anxious but to pray in every circumstance and situation, let the Lord know what we need, and be thankful for what we have. When we do this, God’s peace, which only comes through Jesus, will guard our hearts and minds against anxiety.

If you are suffering from anxiety, place your hope and trust in Jesus. He commands His steadfast love towards you, so you do not have to fear. You don’t have to allow the threat of what might be rob you of the joy of today. Instead, seek Jesus! When you seek Him first, He will add what you truly need to your life. Look to Him. Gaze upon Him and behold His goodness and love. Instead of being overwhelmed with anxiety, you can be overcome with His love.

Let’s leave anxiety behind in 2022. Trust that God knows what you need, and when you seek Him first, He will meet your needs in ways that will truly blow your mind!
