Dear Sparrow’s Song Family,

Happy Birthday, Church!  This coming Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, the day we celebrate the church’s birth. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came, marking the birth of the church. This reminds us of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of believers and the establishment of the early church. It is a time to celebrate!

As we finish Week two of our Embrace the Word study on “The Bold Church: Built on Christ, our Firm Foundation,” we are reminded of the start of the early church and the Holy Spirit’s involvement in the church today.

[1] When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all [a]with one accord in one place. [2] And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. [3] Then there appeared to them [b]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. [4] And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4

Here are some ways to celebrate Pentecost :

  • Reflect on the significance of Pentecost as the church’s birthday, where believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and empowered to spread the gospel.
  • Consider how the Holy Spirit continues to work in and through the church today, guiding, empowering, and equipping believers for ministry.
  • Take a moment to thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the unity and diversity found within the body of Christ, reflecting on how each member plays a vital role in the church.
  • Pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in your life and the church so that you may boldly proclaim the gospel and live out your faith in a way that glorifies God.

As we reflect on Pentecost, let us remember the Holy Spirit’s transformative power in believers’ lives. Just as the early disciples were made bold to spread the good news, may we, too, be filled with the Spirit’s guidance and empowerment to share the love of Christ with those around us. Let us embrace our role as members of the body of Christ, united in purpose and driven by the same Spirit that ignited the church on that great day of Pentecost.

In Week Three, we will continue discussing being one body with many members. Just like the human body, the body of Christ has many parts that serve different functions, but we are still one body. May we embrace the unity that the Holy Spirit brings!
