Embrace the Word ~ May 2024: The Bold Church: Built on Christ, our Firm Foundation / Week 4

We are coming to the end of our Embrace the Word study on “The Bold Church: Built on Christ, our Firm Foundation.” Last week, we explored the concept of the church having many members but one body. If you are in Christ, you are a part of the Lord’s Church. You are a part of a diverse yet unified body, drawn together with the love of Christ and in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

Last week, we explored truths about the body of Christ found in 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12. These truths should transform the way we view the church today.

  • Unity in Diversity: Though the church is made up of many diverse members with different gifts, backgrounds, and roles, they are all part of one unified body. A unified and diverse church community serves as a powerful witness to the world, demonstrating the transformative power of Christ that transcends cultural, racial, and social barriers, drawing others to the love and truth of the gospel (1 Corinthians 12:12).
  • Interdependence and Value of Every Member: Each member of the body is essential to the church. Everyone plays a crucial role in the body’s functioning (1 Corinthians 12:14-26).
  • Mutual Care and Support: We are encouraged to support, care for, and uplift one another within the body of Christ, celebrating victories together and bearing one another’s burdens (1 Corinthians 12:25-26).
  • Equal Concern for All Members: There should be equal concern and honor for all members of the body, recognizing the value and contribution of each individual (1 Corinthians 12:22-24).
  • Working Together for the Common Good: We should work together harmoniously, utilizing our unique gifts and talents for the mutual benefit and growth of the body of Christ (Romans 12:4-5).

As part of the Lord’s Church, we are united in diversity by the love of Christ and the unity of the Holy Spirit. The truths from 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12 emphasize the unity in diversity within the church, showcasing Christ’s love across cultural and social boundaries. Every member is vital to the body, and mutual care, equal concern, and harmonious collaboration are essential for the common good and growth of the church community. My prayer is, “Lord, make us one!”

This week, we will examine the church and how we “do life” together. To “do life” together means to journey through the ups and downs of life in a close-knit community, sharing experiences, supporting one another, and building meaningful relationships. This is the church!
