You may question why we would spend this month studying about us. Some may wonder, “Shouldn’t we read the Bible to learn about God? We don’t want to have a gospel of me!” I totally agree with those statements. Along with those, I would say that before we can learn about ourselves, we must understand Who God is and what He has done for us. With those truths firmly in place, it is crucial to understand who you are by knowing and embracing what God has said about you.

Knowing your identity in Christ is important because it provides a stable foundation for your life. When you base your life on God’s love and truth rather than external factors, you will live with purpose, confidence, and a sense of belonging. You will know that your worth comes directly from your relationship with Christ, not your achievements or circumstances.

We don’t just embrace and celebrate these truths so that we can sit back and look at how wonderful we are. We explore our identity in Christ so that we come away knowing our purpose in Him, prepared to live it out.

A great example of this is the application of 1 Peter 2:9. According to 1 Peter 2:9, we are a “chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession.” These phrases shape our understanding of who we are in Christ. The rest of the verse tells us how we should live in a way that reflects this truth.

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 1 Peter 2:9

We are called to declare the praises of Jesus, who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. Our primary calling is to be witnesses of Christ and proclaim the goodness, grace, and love of Jesus Christ.

Recognizing that we have been delivered from the darkness of sin and death into the marvelous light of God’s presence should lead us to deep gratitude and joyful worship. Our lives are to be a living declaration of the praises of our Savior. As we declare the praises of Jesus, we become a living testimony to the world of the hope and redemption found in Him. Our new identity in Christ becomes a powerful witness that draws others out of darkness and into the light.

Consider how your identity in Christ and your purpose as His child shapes the way you live, your decisions, and your impact on the world around you. Allow these truths to empower you to walk in the light and to declare the praises of the One who has called you out of darkness.

This week, we look at our identity and belonging. Everyone longs to belong and through Jesus, we do! Let’s discover our people and how to walk out this part of our identity.
