Let’s Consider

| | | | |

“Lord, keep me day by day,/in a pure and perfect way./I want to live, I want to live on,/in a building not made by man’s hands*”

I grew up singing this song, asking the Lord to keep me. When I was a young girl, I would think of Him protecting me physically or even by protecting my mind. God is able to keep us in this way. His Word assures us that He will indeed keep us physically and mentally.  Praise God for that!

However, when the church mothers used to tell us, “the Lord is able to keep you” they meant that the Lord will help you maintain and continue on your spiritual journey.

Let’s consider 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

God will sanctify you through His Word (John 17:17). He will set you apart for His purposes so that you can walk upright before Him.  He does this so that your spirit, soul, and body may be kept complete and be found blameless when Jesus returns.

No, we will not be perfect or sinless as we live in the flesh. But Jesus, the One who is perfectly sinless, has brought us with His precious blood. And He Himself joyfully presents us to His Father, as a new creation, covered with His blood (Jude 1:24-25).

Why does Jesus do it? He does it because He loves you. He called you and He will fulfill His call by making you holy, guarding you, watching over you, and protecting you as you live for Him.

Be encouraged, even if you are struggling today. Know this: You can walk in righteousness. You can live fully for the Lord. You can be free from slavery to sin. Not because of your efforts, but because Jesus is fully trustworthy to do what He promised.

Rest in the assurance that if Christ has set you free, you are free indeed.  You will make mistakes, but keep praying. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Ask the Lord to keep you day by day.  Then rest in the knowledge that He is faithful to do just that!
