Your Week 1 Guide is Here! Welcome to the Psalms of Ascents

Hello Family,

It’s summertime! One of the very first things I do when I get into the car is turn on the music. Music is sometimes the best companion for a journey. Thousands of years ago, God’s people used music on their journeys too! That is exactly what the Psalms of Ascents are. They are the ultimate soundtrack for a journey.

Welcome to our brand new Embrace the Word Summer in the Psalms study, “The Psalms of Ascents: A Journey to God”!

We journey toward God by bringing our real, messy, authentic heart to His throne. This July, we are packing our travel bags, lacing up our walking shoes, and moving upward together. Over the next four weeks, we will study all 15 of these beautiful, ancient pilgrim Psalms to see how they calibrate our hearts for our own spiritual pilgrimage today.

Here is a look at our roadmap for the month:

  • Week 1: Perfect Protection – We kick off our journey by looking to the hills for our true help (Psalm 121) and learning what it means to fiercely pray for peace and unity (Psalm 122).
  • Week 2: True Rest – We will explore powerful themes of divine deliverance (Psalm 124), what it means to be spiritually unshakable (Psalm 125), and how to fully rest from anxious toil (Psalm 127).
  • Week 3: Humility and Endurance – We will dive into enduring opposition (Psalm 129), crying out to God from the absolute depths (Psalm 130), and quieting our souls in true humility (Psalm 131).
  • Week 4: Unity & Blessing – We conclude our climb by resting in the dwelling place of God (Psalm 132), tasting the rich fragrance of unity (Psalm 133), and praising God even in the dark nights (Psalm 134).

At the end of our study, we will switch to a beautiful, Christ-centered focus. Because the Psalms of Ascent are all about a long, uphill journey to the presence of God. Looking at Jesus on those final days reminds us that He is the way, the companion, and the real destination of our journey.
